It focuses on the new Lighting Analysis tool in 3DS Max 2009. All too often, lighting design is reduced to calculation of the quantity of light on a grid applied to the desk tops in an office or to the walls in an art gallery. Even in open plan office environments, such an approach not only creates spaces with a boring appearance, but it has a detrimental effect on productivity. The demonstrations will explore ways to predict lighting quality as well as quantity. Quality issues to be dealt with through design include: glare, design for cloudy and sunny conditions, daily and seasonal sky variability, task visibility and art protection. I started this tutorial with the idea of work ing through the work flow to prod uce the images on this page. There is no way a conceptual model exploring issues of the fe asibility of daylighting could possibly be as far developed as this model. In the 1980s and 1990s this focused p eoples attention on producing simplified design tools, rules of thumb for use early in the design process.
